Philadelphia August 1844 To Geo. Lee Dear Sir, Since my arrival in the city I have been actively engaged in ascertaining the best course to be pursued in the purchase of our apparatus and its cost. I have consulted with the best authorities upon this subject that our city affords and will convey in a few words the result of our consultations. As to the probable expense of the apparatus such as would suit an institution like our own I say probable expense, for they tell me that we cannot make an exact estimate before hand. )? is as follows: |
|
| Maps, with books of description etc, of a superior character | $39.00 |
| A pair of globes | 25.00 |
| Ossery | 35.00 |
| Apparatus to illustrate Mechanics etc | 65.00 |
| Apparatus " " Pneumatics | 90.00 |
| Apparatus " " Hydrostatics and Hydrodynamics | 40.00 |
| Apparatus " " Electricity | 80.00 |
| Apparatus " " Steam etc | 25.00 |
| Apparatus " " Galvanism etc | 40.00 |
| Apparatus " " Optics | 25.00 |
| A pair of Scales | 110.00 |
| Chemical Apparatus and Chemicals | 100.00 |
$574.00 |

There will be an expense of about $10 per annum after the first year? The most economical course recommended is that parts of the above named articles be purchased in Boston and the others at Philadelphia. Mr. Crefson Prof. of Nat. Phil at the Franklin Institute a man greatly to be relied on in these matters advised that most of the Philosophical Apparatus should be purchased in Boston, and has furnished me with a list of the prices in that market which Ive have used in making out our estimate. Prof. Booth has marked up such chemical apparatus as can be obtained at lower prices in Boston than here, and has given me the necessary instructions in reference to their selections. There is some difficulty involved here, in order that the apparatus be selected purposely one must ______ it and that required the presence of the selection in Boston, especially where a comparision of workmanship, price etc is to be made between several instruments and between those manufactured in the two places: _____ such must be done in the present case. I have now lists of the prices of several manufacturers in this place and have not yet finished visiting their manufactories. I am waiting now to hear something more definite from the Board. I would not be willing to go to Boston at my own expense; but would be willing to go if it were the wish of the Board provided they would allow me a moderate sum to defray necessary expenses. It is considered that much more than this expense could be saved by one going on there to purchase than to order the apparatus and even in the latter case a great deal can be saved. You can readily see that Mr. Converse will be no service in this case. I remain yours truly, Dr. Geo Lee Wm H Hunter
