| In the late summer of 1861 it became apparent to the citizens of Leesburg that they would have Confederate casualties that would need to be buried and this section of 24 plots was designated in Union Cemetery for this purpose. The muster rolls of the 17th Mississippi Regiment record that in August two soldiers died of disease and were buried in Union Cemetery with another 19 dying from disease in September. In October three soldiers died during the Battle of Ball's Bluff, a fourth wounded in the leg who would die on November 30th. Throughout the winter of '61-'62 another 11 men would die of disease bringing the total to 36 men of the 17th buried in Union Cemetery. http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mscivilw/17thms.htm | |||||
